I usually start my day by watching the weather network then watching cbc news. One of the stories today was about a 19 year old woman that was killed by two coyotes. The attack happened at Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia. The woman was attacked while walking the trail and was found by two other people who scared off the coyotes. She was flown out by helicopter to a nearby hospital but died during the night due to her injuries.

The park is now going to trap and kill the coyotes that live at this park. They have confirmed that there are six coyotes in total but cannot know which two killed the woman. So instead, they are just going to kill them all. Now, I know it is sad and that it must be frustrating and hard on the womans' family members but is it right to kill the coyotes? I am an open minded person and I understand that people who walk this trail want to be safe, the woman's family and friends want retribution, and the park is just thinking they might be liable and want to protect their customers and parks reputation. If this happened to me, and say my sister was killed I know I would feel very sad and even more so angry. She was just walking a trail, enjoying nature and died for what? I couldnt say exactly what I would do because the situation didnt happen to me. I would like to say "I would raise awareness, try and find out why the coyotes did it and tell other people this story so this may never happen again." But would my emotions get the better of me and I side with the killings?

Since my emotions wont cloud my judgement I'll go with "Does that still justify killing all of the coyotes?" You have to take into account that we are invading their living space, the coyotes might have been scared or agitated and this attack has only happened once.

What if there were 30 coyotes? Would it be right to kill all of them? What if they were the last of their species? This is exactly why sharks and tigers were hunted "to protect people". When these animals are living in their natural habitats and we come along and screw things up. The animals get scared and frightened and only want to protect themselves, just like humans. The only difference is instead of protecting ourseleves in the moment, we go and eradicate all of the animals in the area. Now tell me, is that right?

This is just my opinion and I want to know what other people feel and why.
